    If everyone can make it we could distribute all of the pre-war models to those that chipped in on this night too… that was part of my thinking in scheduling a race right after the show… there is still enough time for some of them to get built before the Coppa D’oro! :wacko:

    MiA will be bringing the models Monday night so that we can distribute them – can’t wait! I saw three of them – I don’t know how many we have in total…

    A reminder that all racers for any R32 race must pre-register as those above have done. Thank you.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Classic Era
    Prototype & Sportscar
    1:32 Challenge Cup
    (1966-1971)

    Simple Rules & Guidelines
    v1.0 – January, 2018

    1)      Open to any Prototype (P) or Sportscar (S), regardless of displacement, that competed between 1966 and 1971 in any endurance race which was part of the World Sportscar Championship or International Championship sanctioned by the FIA. By endurance race we mean a race lasting many hours (ie. 24, 12, 6) or over a large distance (ie. 1000k). Headlights are not a requirement (if the model raced did not have them) nor must headlights be functional.
    2)      Bodies must be hard plastic/resin with period appropriate (actual or fantasy) livery. No two entries may have the same race number. Race numbers will be reserved or assigned.
    3)      Interiors may be made from any material. There is no minimum level of detail required by either a body or interior but attention to detail will always be appreciated.
    4)      Rear tires must be Orange Dot DArts for this event/series and will be available in the following sizes: D11, SI0201 (or NC0102) and NC0101.
    5)      This event is open to any adult with an eligible model and controller.
    6)      Any model that compromises the track for others in any way will not be permitted or will be removed from the track.

    Reserving Your Race Number & Purchasing Marked DArts
    One (1) number may be reserved or will be assigned (absent a request) for each pair of marked DArt tires purchased up to a maximum of 3 per participant regardless of how many pair of marked DArts are purchased by anyone. Numbers will be reserved or confirmed upon receipt of payment (pickup may be on a later date or even at the event). The deadline to purchase your DArts (or reserve your racing number(s)) will be midnight the day prior to the event. Multiple models may qualify but only the top entry for each participant will advance. NO loaners or substitutions after qualifying has begun and all models will be impounded from that point on.

    Contact me to order/purchase your marked DArt tires by email: [email protected].

    Format:
    All models must qualify and advance through elimination heats to make it to the A main for a chance to win or place in this event/series. Qualifying order will be assigned by random draw. Since this is FREE there will be no guaranteed minimum number of minutes raced. The number of participants will dictate the exact format.

    • Participant – pilot/racer/driver
    • Entry – model/car/slot car

    Qualifying:

    Random Chip Draw: Participants pick a numbered chip for each Entry (up to 3 maximum) to determine qualifying order of each Entry (there may be 7 Participants & 21 Entries);

    Qualifying Order: Ascending from #1… THEN  #2 followed by #1 (Participants qualify every Entry) (ie. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 2, 1). #1 and #2 get a second chance to improve their avg. lap time;

    Qualifying: Entries each qualify over 12 laps (2 warmup and 10 hot laps). An Entries’ average lap time over 10 hot laps determines qualifying position. Marshals will be present and marshal Entries in real time;

    For Participants with more than one Entry – Participant must choose one Entry to advance to the race – Entry chosen need not be the fastest but will be seeded based on that Entry’s qualifying position.

    Race:

    Seeding based on qualifying result;

    Number of Participants/Entries will determine exact format (number & length of heats).

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Racing numbers 1, 3 and 16 are now reserved and our list updated. Good luck to all participants! :yahoo:

    As the Challenge Cup approaches I can’t wait to see what models will be presented to qualify…!!! :yahoo:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Classic Era Challenge Cup III
    (1966-1971)
    Plastic is Fantastic!

    Twelve entries presented by six participants attempted to qualify for the 3rd running of the Classic Era Challenge Cup held at The Ring. The qualifying field consisted of models from Lola (2), Ford (4), Porsche (4) & Ferrari (2). Random draw determined qualifying order. A 10 lap ‘Indy’ style average lap result (with 2 warm up laps) determined qualifying position… …that was just the start of this endurance event. Only six of these entries would qualify for the endurance challenge – one from each participant.

    Qualifying Result (10 Laps):

    1. JMs#30 – 5.881 seconds (average);
    2. JMs#14 – 6.032;
    3. DwM#6 – 6.105;
    4. ArT#21 – 6.155;
    5. ArT#20 – 6.171*;
    6. DwM#2 – 6.207*;
    7. DwM#40 – 6.341;
    8. JMs#7 – 6.442*;
    9. MiA#11 – 6.592*;
    10. KeM#9 – 6.799*;
    11. MiA#18 – 6.947;
    12. FUn#3 – 7.813*.

    Race for the Finals Result (5 min. x 3 = 15 min.):

    Half of the participants elected not to race their fastest qualified entries – each for a different reason. The top three finishers in this race would qualify for the ‘A’ Final and the next three finishers would qualify for the ‘B’ Final. Custom rotation ensured that everyone raced with every other participant at least once in these six heats. The pace was far from pedestrian as everyone jockeyed for position ‘elbows out’ and a chance to make the Finals. The top three shared heat victories equally with 2 each – and finished within a lap of one another. The whole field found speed towards the end with KeM  making the most dramatic climb in heat totals to come within just 4 laps of MiA while FUn improved his results by a lap each heat despite a front tire puncture. To say the racing was close would be an understatement.

    1. ArT#20 – 148 Laps (12.236 ext.);
    2. JMs#7 – 147 (8.010);
    3. DwM#2 – 147 (9.620);
    4. MiA#11 – 136 (9.644);
    5. KeM#9 – 132 (13.539);
    6. FUn#3 – 111 (24.761).

    ‘B’ Final Result (5 min. x 6 = 30 min.):

    A coming together at the narrows found MiA in the weeds suffering a momentary drivetrain issue but using some chewing gum and a few spare pieces of lint disaster would be averted. By the half way point KeM was on the attack and gaining but a few trips to the marbles saw has charge slip away. FUn struggled with a vibration but would turn his fastest laps of the event towards the end to finish strong.

    1. MiA#11 – 265 Laps (30.492 ext.);
    2. KeM#9 – 257 (17.480);
    3. FUn#3 – 227 (24.831).

    ‘A’ Final Result (5 min. x 6 = 30 min.):

    In the first heat all would go into the narrows each thinking they were in the lead and only one would emerge – taking an early but short lived lead. Despite wheelies JMs would quickly pass to regain top spot and win every heat thereafter. While down on power DwM soldiered on to reach into the low 5.9s but the race wasn’t over just yet. ArT would finish a clean race with a dirty car having thrown everything at the leader but the kitchen sink – eventually to finish a lap behind the winner. JMs would not falter – maintaining his blazingly fast yet steady pace to earn a well deserved victory – and be crowned ‘Top Cock’ and recipient of the prestigious and world famous ‘Chickone-eh’ trophy.

    1. JMs#7 – 305 Laps (14.948 ext.);
    2. ArT#20 – 304 (22.104);
    3. DwM#2 – 297 (24.972).

    The all plastic RTR field guaranteed that for the first time in this series a RTR model would take the checkers – has the tide turned or is this just a blip? You’ll need to attend the next Challenge Cup this fall to find out if plastic is truly fantastic

    Well done JMs! Cheers to every participant who survived the enduro – especially MiA!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Cheers MiA!

    Door prize from last night goes to KeM :good:  – you’ve won  :yahoo: a painted and weathered complete set of four Chaparral .450″ inserts courtesy DArt.

    Also – a hearty thank you to KeM for bringing the chocolate that kept everyone’s sugar levels up… and to DwM for bringing those snips of fabric to share with everyone 🙂 :good: – Cheers!

    I am happy to race with five who I trust follow the rules and who are clean racers and good company… the more not necessarily the merrier – a lesson learned long ago – we aren’t entertainers or selling tickets nor is this a business, a party or a carnival – it is a gathering of friends who share the same interests and goals within this hobby.

    Thanks for hosting a pleasant day at the circuit Porsche911! Spa Lyon sure is a spectacular track! :good:

    Cheers to MiA and racer68 for each winning a DArt door prize – a pair of MIR02 & a set of 4 suspension springs… :wacko:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    For the benefit of anyone who couldn’t make it and for those who did 😉 …

    Model picked was a Ferrari 158 Grand Prix racer. This model had two visible shock absorbers so it made sense to make those first. From the space available and orientation they needed to be approximately 10mm long. To keep things simple I would mount them using the same wire used to make the rest of the suspension detail. This means that we would only need to make the upper and lower portions plus the spring – the upper and lower portions of the shock absorber would later be glued in place on the suspension wire with clear epoxy and together they would sandwich the spring.

    We need the following pieces to make these parts:The wire at the bottom is a flexible wire from the dollar store which had the green vinyl insulation burned off and was cleaned by sanding. It comes in packs of 200 or so and is used for flower arrangements. Without the vinyl coating it is .021″ thick. It is quite flexible but sturdy enough and therefore perfect for decorative suspension detail.This tool was made to sand some of the very small ‘ring’ pieces. It is just a 3/32″ aluminium tube through which an .062″ wire can slide. You can also use the wire to hold your springs to grind the ends flat.I first cut and sanded the two halves of the shock – the upper and lower portions using my dremel tool. There would be a gap between them when the spring was mounted allowing the .021″ wire to be exposed – and the total length would need to be no more than 10mm.To hold the spring in place we need rings on the upper and lower portions – the easiest way to make these is to cut styrene (#223) tube after using a 1/16″ drill bit to enlarge the hole. Use the tool to sand the ring to the right size/depth.Next the springs needed to be created. Pick some flexible decorative wire in the colour you want and wind it tightly around a 1/16″ rod. I wound a long section which I would later cut into two pieces.Stretch the wire carefully keeping the coil gaps as uniform as possible. Remove the whole thing from the rod and then pick the best two sections to cut out to the right length (in my case 8mm). To avoid messing up the gaps use a thin knife blade to stretch out the space where you want to make your cuts and use a small side cutter to cut the wire. Now you have two springs. To clean up the ends put each one on the rod again and push in the top and bottom making sure to brace the rest of the coil in order to preserve the existing uniform gaps. Next I used my dremel tool to grind away the wire ends so that the spring was flat on both top and bottom – if it can stand up vertically then it is flat…

    Now we have everything for the shock absorbers. I used super glue to fix the styrene rings to the brass tube pieces and now they were ready for paint.

    (to be continued…)

    Just to help clarify – R32 “SP” class rules allow ‘any’ inline chassis with a low power motor. There is no restriction to plastic chassis but the configuration must be inline and weigh at least 75g:

    SP & SP+ Sportscars – ‘Open’ Inline ‘Low Power’ Motor OR ‘Open’ Unlimited
    (will race together in any SP race but will be scored separately)
    SP1. Eligible Models: Any 1950’s or 1960’s era Sportscar (production or prototype) that competed
    in past endurance races. NOTE: ‘endurance’ should be interpreted to mean 24hr, 12hr, 6hr,
    1000k or Multiple Stage races;
    SP2. SP – Any inline chassis;
    SP+ – Any chassis in any configuration;
    SP3. SP – ‘Low Power’ motors: BWA BWNC1 or Ninco NC1, Ninco NC8 or BWA BWMS050 or
    Vanski FF050 motor;
    SP+ – Any motor;
    SP4. Chassis may be braced and strengthened using any material;
    SP5. Wheels – maximum 14mm diameter representative of a period race wheel with appropriate
    wheel/insert detail;
    SP6. Rear Tires: Any appropriately sized DArt club urethane replacement tire.
    SP7. Maximum width of body not to exceed 57mm;
    SP8. SP – Minimum overall weight of 75g;
    SP+ – No minimum overall weight;
    SP9. Optional modifications: ANY provided these class rules and General Rules for an ‘Open’
    class are met.

    The current R32 rules (v4.1) are ‘stuck’ to the top of the R32 sub forum. To go to the topic click here. Hope this helps… Cheers!

    Thank you JMSracer for hosting another R32 race morning at the fabulous River!

    Thank you also for your hospitality including coffee, snacks and a pizza lunch too!

    My highlight of the day was the 20 lap CANAM battle I had with ‘Joe’ – we must have passed one another at least two or three times each lap – a clean duel that will remain a personal highlight of mine for a very long time. Cheers ‘Joe’!!!

    JMSracer – if you do have pics posting them within this race thread is always most welcome.

    Enjoy Labour Day! Cheers!

    Gents, if there are only 3 or 4 of us I’ve got several race formats in slottrak we can use (one old, two new):

    • three lane – numerous 15 second heats – traditional rotation – crash and burn;
    • two lane head to head round robin – most points wins (points for finish & fastest lap of heat);
    • three lane – single heat – random chip draw for lane assignments – no rotation;

    Hi Joe, you aren’t the only one who has been thwarted by the marked tire requirement. :scratch: Make sure to bring all of your eligible models with you Saturday morning and we’ll sort it out then…

    There are several reasons why we started the Challenge Cup Series with a marked tire:

    1. It came to my attention that some would grumble that R32 had too many rules which was a turn-off for them akin to kryptonite;
    2. It was obvious that there are others in other groups who simply will not follow rules and who will try to get away with whatever they believe they can. I don’t refer to inadvertence, oversight or rookie mistakes – I refer specifically to some who are experienced and who intentionally do it. I saw this happen not long ago regarding tires and I was told about an incident regarding motors in a ‘stock’ motor class just a week ago – both SOS32 events.
    3. A nearly ‘open’ class of cars would satisfy two groups of racers – those who just want to go fast with a RTR car and those who enjoy scratch building fast cars – and encourage both groups to race together.

    The goal was to encourage anyone who thinks they are fast to join in with the rest of us at a neutral location – Molto VeLoce – to give anyone a chance to demonstrate how fast, how good a builder and/or how good a tuner they each are relative to anyone else. Some have taken up the challenge, many have not. Now that the series has had three races it is clear that many have no interest in doing so. You can lead a horse to water…

    Apart from model eligibility the marked tire is the only other rule – and really I think a perfect solution to the age old problem of making sure everyone is racing on the same compound/tire – not for those of us in groups that use the same tire as matter of course – but for anyone else – and those who jump from tire to tire depending on where they are racing.

    Unfortunately those who are racing in this series are not the ones which prompted the inclusion of a marked tire. It is really a nuisance for those of us racing in groups where we use just the one tire or for those of us who are careful always to use the correct/mandated tire depending on where we are racing. If no others wish to join in on this series then perhaps this requirement should be dropped in the future. Food for thought. But I think it would be premature to give up on this experiment just yet.

    Make sure to bring all of your eligible models with you, including any which don’t have orange dot tires, and we’ll sort it all out Saturday morning…

    I’ll be dropping by MVL on Friday to clean the track and make sure everything is in order prior to Saturday’s race. If anyone wants to help out or join me for an hour or two please email me – otherwise I’ll see you all Saturday morning! :yahoo:

    2. #7 – JMs – 6.744; *
    3. #14 – JMs – 6.839;

    8. #51 – Ken – 7.782; *
    9. #56 – Steve – 7.890; *
    10. #38 – Sal – 8.944. *

    *Primary, **Backup

    Race Result (240 seconds x 4 lanes x 3 rotations = 48 minutes):

    After 1/3 Distance:

    1. #7 – JMs – 144 Laps;
    2. #20 – ArT – 141;
    3. #92 – Joe – 129;
    4. #51 – Ken – 124;
    5. #56 – Steve – 122;
    6. #38 – Sal – 104.

    After 2/3 Distance:

    1. #7 – JMs – 287 Laps;
    2. #20 – ArT – 282;
    3. #92 – Joe – 256;
    4. #51 – Ken – 255;
    5. #56 – Steve – 243;
    6. #38 – Sal – 209.

    Full Distance:

    1. #7 – JMs – 431 Laps (36.038 ext.) [6.539 seconds – fastest lap];
    2. #20 – ArT – 422 (43.994) [6.632];
    3. #92 – Joe – 388 (39.520) [7.045];
    4. #51 – Ken – 388 (59.432) [6.929];
    5. #56 – Steve – 367 (47.751) [7.039];
    6. #38 – Sal – 317 (41.355) [8.081].

    JMs held the lead from the first lap onwards – controlling the race from the front and building a comfortable cushion. ArT chased but without a mechanical gremlin ahead was forced to settle for second. It came down to the last heat to decide third place – with Ken clawing back time, but falling just short. Joe bent but never cracked. Steve increased his pace and made up time as he gained his rhythm. Sal put in a valiant effort in his Lola despite being down a cylinder for the entire race. Congratulations to JMs for a superb victory! He earned the Chickon-eh trophy with a splendid drive – definitely the ‘top cock’ today.  Ford would take the top 2 spots, sharing the podium with a Porsche 908… Cheers to the field for surviving this grueling endurance format and to both Joe and Ken who not only debuted new scratch built models –  but battled right to the end to make the last heat as exciting as the first… Well done to everyone!!!

    And Congratulations to JMs who guessed lucky number 8 to walk away with the door prize – a DArt Eclektrix GP Series Shadow DN1 Quick Body Kit…

    …and thank you to our gracious host Doug at MVL for allowing us to play on his giant layout again! :good:

    Classic Era Challenge Cup V (1966-1971)

    Saturday, February 2, 2019

    Throngs gathered at the Molto VeLoce Circuit (MVL) to witness the 5th running of the Challenge Cup – a series dedicated to showcasing many of the fastest models prepared by R32ians. Transporters with a variety of period models sporting chassis of every kind, both scratch built and RTR plastic – from Thunderslot, Shapeways, Slot.It and NSR, and one sporting a scratch built body, many with full interiors and some with cards. Two awards were up for grabs – the Chickoneh & the Voisin – for the race winner and marshal of the race respectively. Many door prizes were generously donated by Ken, including the ones listed above, so everyone would leave a winner!

    It was agreed to adjust the race format by permitting each builder to race TWO models (scored separately). The second model (if raced) did not require orange dot tires.

    Good Luck!

    [Model particulars (above) are from memory – forgive me if any model detail is inaccurate – I forgot my camera and did not have pictures to reference.]

    The Chickoneh went to the brand new entry – a Porsche 908/3. There was a tie for the Voisin – Congratulations to both Joe and Ken who shared marshaling honours. MiA took home the Lancia and everyone went home with a cool door prize – all donated generously by Ken.

    It was super nice to win a door prize too! Here’s my GT40:

    A huge thank you to Doug at MVL and to everyone who could make it out to race! Thank you to those that helped clean the track too! A big thanks to Ken for donating so many cool door prizes as well (and for drawing my name for the GT40)!

    Wow! …with Orange Dots already – that means the car is going for just $47.50 (cdn) if you factor in the cost of the tires… and the fact that you don’t even need to mount them… a great deal for anyone needing a car for the Challenge Cup. I think it is the Andretti car perhaps? I’m sure someone will snatch it up quickly…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    All are held here at The Ring unless otherwise indicated – so here…

    Usually only your questions but I’ll defer to our workshop leader and await RedZed’s response… I’m looking forward to it as much as everyone else…

    BTW, I believe you’ll see a new Aluminum chassis in a 312p at the Classic Era Challenge Cup this Saturday at MVL… this will be a true test in an unlimited class… be there or don’t be there…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    There was a blank registration which I removed – not sure how that happened… so two spots left as of now…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Ken offered a draft of his 2 page hand out to review – it is quite comprehensive and provides part numbers and brands – an excellent compliment for what I am sure will be a very helpful demonstration – he is even bringing his drill press with compound table!

    See everyone Monday night!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Wow! That paint really pops!  :wacko: You’ll need to do a demonstration on how you get that paint on so nicely too! Thanks again Ken – looking forward to tonight’s workshop already… :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Ken, your enthusiasm is second to none. Thank you for sharing your chassis build tips with us last night – your demonstration was exceptional and showed the rest of us just how you do what you do… far better than any lecture or a student hands on session full of frustration and mistakes… your tips and thoughts on chassis building were sooooo helpful too! Thank you also for providing your 2 page handout… very helpful indeed – and no need to take notes…

    Thank you for offering the generous door prizes too!

    I’m sure we can wrangle another workshop session for you in December if you have the time and inclination… boy does enthusiasm rub off!!!

    Cheers to Doug at MVL for allowing us to race at his fabulous venue, to Ken & Marcello who helped prep the track and to John, Jim and Joe Guts who added to a very entertaining and competitive R32 raceday at Molto VeLoce! In less than 3 hours everyone raced for 64 minutes apiece which meant that there were a few tired fingers leaving…

    Winner of the prestigious Voisin Trophy for Marshal of the Day is John…

    Cheers also to our door prize winners: John, Ken & Joe!

    Also, thank you to all of our participants for adhering to our Covid-19 protocols…

    Until next time – Good Racing and See You Again Soon! :good:

    Hi Felix,

    Yes, thank you for reminding me – I forgot to mention the fact that saliva will no longer be permitted to clean tires now (unless you mix it with mouse poop which I hear neutralizes any virus :yahoo: but it isn’t good practice to mix those ingredients in your mouth!!!)… I’ll add that to the event details… thankfully urethane tires don’t need any regular cleaning during use but it is helpful to get the crud and dust off of them with some H2O or to give them a light sanding to wake them up after a period of inactivity… masks should help eliminate that nasty ritual too…

    Don’t worry if you don’t have a Trans Am model yet Felix – no need to race in all four classes – there might be a loaner or placeholder or someone might even have one for sale…

    See you Saturday Felix!

    Actually you don’t need to turn your head at all to see the whole track! Ha Ha Ha Ha!

    But on a serious side it works really well for two car racing in a small space.

    Looking very good so far Ken and the finish line is in sight! I guess curbs, gantry cover and some foliage are all that’s left… won’t be long now!!! Keep riding that wave of inspiration!

    in reply to: La Carrera Panamericana XIII #38635

    Someone noticed something in the ditch…

    Curiosity got the better of them…

    Wow! Looks like the abandoned wreck of a small silver sportscar!A Porsche 356 SL from the 1953 running of the famous Carrera Panamericana! And it looks to be in fairly good condition too!

    After being pulled out of the ditch this abandoned race car was given a tear down, parts were ordered, and some research done… revealing the following according to Racing Sportscars:

    Hmmm… over time limit due to an accident…

    Clearly it saw better days before the start of competition – all shiny and new!

    Among the company of giants…

    Notice some new sponsorship added along with the obligatory Carrera plates… time for the local crew of garagistas lead by their sponsor DArturo to restore this abandoned model to some sort of former glory regardless of how disappointing the outcome in the Carrera had been…
